National Mining Museum Scotland
Let’s begin by going back, The scale of past industrial activity is best viewed at the National Mining Museum Scotland, where the 1,625 foot shaft and winding tower powered by Scotland’s largest steam engine is housed.
The National Mining Museum is a unique visitor centre right on the Borders Railway line. The museum will give the whole family an insight into Midlothian’s rich heritage and history.


Rosslyn Chapel
If you’re family are fans of all things famous then this should be your next stop in Midlothian. The late-gothic Rosslyn Chapel – which featured in The Da Vinci Code – is an impressive landmark. With centuries old history and mystery, it is not be missed.
After a tour, enjoy tea and cake in the modern visitor centre and learn more of the chapel and its history. Be sure not to miss the beautiful Roslin Glen on your way back.
Dalkeith Country Park
We may be biased but we think a day out in Dalkeith Country Park holds many exciting options. Take in the views of Dalkeith Palace, explore the trails to spot deer and other wildlife, pick up a lunch or some treats in Restoration Yard and enjoy the green space.
For many Midlothian parents though, Dalkeith Country Park has become synonymous with adventure play since their own childhoods. Fort Douglas’ houses magical turreted treehouses, suspension bridges, slides, zip lines, climbing walls and secret tunnels. Sky Maze, for ages five plus, is designed for parents to enjoy the fun too. While the new Mini Maze is a new pre-school play area for littler ones to begin explorative adventures, safely.


Glencorse Auld Kirk
If you are a television fanatic then this Midlothian location has to be on your list. The most famous scene in the television series Outlander was shot at the historic and beautiful Glencorse Auld Kirk, nestled in the grounds of Glencorse House, with The Pentlands as a backdrop, is where Claire and Jamie Fraser got married. A stunning location with its own history too,
