Winter can be a challenging time of year for wildlife. At Dalkeith Country Park we are very lucky to host an abundance of Holly trees, Dog Rose and other berry bearing plants. All of these food sources make the park an excellent place to see wildlife and to be immersed in nature.
Throughout the year we have been working on removing invasive species as they reduce viable habitat and as such we have opened up lots of opportunity for wildlife to expand.
The Red Trail
Our favorite walk at the moment is our Red Trail. Along the bank of the river North Esk we have recorded a family group of Long Tailed Tits and recently a pair of Bullfinches feeding off the Holly. Additionally on the Red Trail, our mainly beech woodland offers very picturesque views of the forest in the snow.
If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, our Green Trail through the North Wood offers wonderful winter walks.
