A squirrel table -pictured here by @kieran.payfair – is a decaying tree stump which has been used for years as a place for squirrels to eat and discard their pine husks. The tell tail signs are picked clean pinecones, seeds and debris all gathered in an impression in the tree stump.
Keep your eyes peeled next time you visit The Park. We hear the squirrels are planning a festive feast!
Birds of Prey
Autumn is a time of bountiful plenty in the countryside. Many woodland creatures are busy storing food to last them throughout the winter. Birds and mammals will store many different food sources in the ground and in the bark of trees.
This flurry of activity at Dalkeith Country Park attracts resident birds of prey like the common buzzard. On your next walk along The Park trails, approach areas cautiously and if you are lucky you may see the birds hunting the lawns and forests.
