PhotoDalkeith 2025
Now in its second year, PhotoDalkeith has returned to the magnificent setting of Dalkeith Palace, showcasing work by some of today’s most distinguished contemporary photographers. Presented in collaboration with the Buccleuch Living Heritage Trust and Studies in Photography, this exciting celebration of photography is now open, just 20 minutes from central Edinburgh.
Open Friday – Sunday until 5 October, PhotoDalkeith offers an inspiring programme of exhibitions, events, workshops, and tours.

Walter Dalkeith's Series
This year’s programme includes a new series by Walter Dalkeith, who offers a personal perspective on Dalkeith Country Park by linking past and present. Inspired by the historic Buccleuch Family Albums, his work sets the archive in conversation with contemporary images he has captured around the estate.
Much Has Changed
The Buccleuch Family Albums offer a fascinating insight into the past. One area that was particularly interesting were historic photos taken around Dalkeith Country park. The photos – currently on display at PhotoDalkeith – date from the 1890’s and portray a very different landscape to the one we see today. One that balanced an act of being part manicured and part wild. Carefully laid out avenues, winding paths and easy access down and along the Esk.
Since the family moved out of Dalkeith Palace in 1914, much has changed. With less maintenance the woods have naturally rewilded while in other parts some were felled and re-planted.

Freedom to Create
The initial desire to create contemporary images from the same locations from the albums was a challenge, with limited descriptions and only the images themselves to give visual clues to their locations. Accepting that it would almost be impossible to uncover the exact locations gave the freedom to create more personal, contemporary impressions of the current landscape, but ones that at least gave a nod to the image of the past.
