Breast Cancer Awareness Month
For nearly four decades now, October has been recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. it is a time annually devoted to educating everyone about breast cancer, the importance of early detection and access to timely, high-quality care and support.
This October we want you to join us at The Park to help spread awareness and shine a light on the incredible work carried out by our charity partner – Make 2nds Count.
Our Charity Partner
Make 2nds Count is a patient and family-focused charity dedicated to giving hope to women and men living with secondary breast cancer. Their mission is: to fund secondary breast cancer research that contributes to advancing an increased quality of life for patients; establish a community that supports and educates patients and families affected by secondary breast cancer; inform and facilitate access to patient trials and to increase overall awareness of secondary breast cancer.
Emma Hall, Head of Operations for Make 2nds Count: “We rely heavily on fundraising and donations to help our community and we are thrilled that Dalkeith Country Park is supporting us. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time when we particularly focus on raising awareness and on education, so the fact that the Park is working with us to fulfil this mission as well as via fundraising is amazing. We are really grateful for their continued support.”

How to get involved
The wilderness walk – located in the heart of Dalkeith Country Park – will be enhanced for the month with the addition of purple prompts throughout the trail giving visitors a vital insight into the work and support provided by Make 2nds Count.
Walkers will be encouraged to capture and share their time on the yellow trail on social media, to be in with a chance of winning a wellness hamper from Restoration Yard, The Parks converted 18th century stableyard.

Research into secondary breast cancer is underfunded. Make 2nds Count’s mission is to fund secondary breast cancer research which contributes to advancing an increased quality of life for patients.
Secondary breast cancer, also known as metastatic or stage IV breast cancer, is a cancer that has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body.
Make 2nds Count
Secondary breast cancer can be treated but it cannot be cured. Treatments aim to control and slow down the disease to enable patients to have the best possible quality of life for as long as possible.

"I felt part of something that made me feel safe, supported and understood by all those around me. It made me feel less isolated and ready to start being me again. With the support from Make 2nds Count I can look forward to living life and not having to always have anxiety about my diagnosis."

The Karen Henderson Legacy Fund, which is a part of Make 2nds Count, raises money in memory of Karen who was a dearly loved visitor to both The Park and Restoration Yard. The proceeds it raises are used directly to support specific Make 2nds Count projects that enhance the quality of life of secondary breast cancer patients.
