Guidance on Multi-Use Paths at Dalkeith Country Park

The recent Covid-19 pandemic has meant we’ve seen an increase in people walking, cycling and horse riding* along the various routes at the Park. It is fantastic to see so many people enjoying fresh air and exercise. However, we also need to ask that everyone is considerate of other users of the routes to help keep everyone safe. The Park has a working farm on site and we ask that at all times their signage is followed for this same purpose.

Please ensure you:

  • Follow the Governments’ social distancing recommendations
  • Watch out for other route users such as horse riders
  • Take your rubbish, including dog waste bags away with you or dispose of it in a bin
  • Abide by the signage – if it asks you not to enter an area, please don’t ignore this
  • Do not light fires anywhere
  • Do not use BBQs
  • Slow down and keep your distance if overtaking
  • Don’t assume everyone can see or hear you

Cyclists:

  • There is a 15mph speed limit in the Park grounds.
  • Slow right down when passing other users, especially horses who can spook easily.
  • Give other users space when passing
  • Don’t pass at speed
  • Use your bell where appropriate to let other users know you’re approaching
  • Avoid horse priority paths – signage will tell you where these are

Dog walkers:

  • Keep dogs on a lead in areas we ask you to, on the working farm and around horse riders. See here for more info about dog walking.
  • In other areas ensure your dog is under control or close to heel
  • Always clean up after your dog and take the bag away with you or bin it
  • Watch out for horse riders, stop and let them pass

Walkers and Runners:

  • Stay alert and listen for cyclists’ bells
  • Allow cyclists to pass
  • Watch out for horse riders, stop and let them pass
  • Avoid horse priority paths – signage will tell you where these are

Smile and say hello to each other – we’re all in this together!

*Please note the only people permitted to horse ride in the Park are those who are tenants at the livery yard within the grounds.
