Acorn Gathering & Planting
The majority of the acorns that we gather here at The Park have been sent to Alba Trees. This allows them to be planted all around the UK. Here at Dalkeith Country Park we have started to germinate 300 acorns of our own. Alongside acorns we have also gathered and planted; horse chestnut, sweet chestnut & scots pine.
Grow your own oak trees
Acorns are hardy seeds and many will germinate, they only need to be put into compost around a half-inch deep and they will sprout around springtime.
To germinate the various trees we have built a cold frame out of scrap wood which is easily done at home and is an excellent way to start off any seed.
If gathering acorns, seeds or berries for planting consider using scrap material to build a cold frame or purchase one if material isn’t available.
Watch out for wildlife
Be careful of smaller wildlife like this young Palmate Newt, whilst picking acorns. Many creatures will use the cover of acorns and leaves for hibernation, shelter from predators and the acorns themselves are a food source.
