DalkeithPhoto | 08 September to 06 October 2024
DalkeithPhoto is an exciting season of photography at Dalkeith Palace. The event will commence with a symposium featuring a cast of expert speakers who will celebrate and explore the art of photography through engaging presentations and conversations. From Sunday 08 September, visitors will have the chance to enjoy four exhibitions, workshops, tours, and portfolio reviews, all running as part of this season of photography within Dalkeith Palace.
Join us as we dive deeper with Charlotte Rostek – Dalkeith Palace Development Lead – on the beginnings and future hopes for DalkeithPhoto.
What Inspired the creation of DalkeithPhoto?
DalkeithPhoto was conceived by Zelda Cheatle, a photographer, curator, and author, along with photographer Walter Dalkeith. During a visit to Bowhill House, the Buccleuch family’s home in the Scottish Borders, Zelda discovered a remarkable collection of family photo albums.
While curating a major exhibition for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), Squaring the Circles of Confusion: Neo-Pictorialism in the 21st Century, she noticed numerous examples of Pictorialism and Neo-Pictorialism within these albums. This sparked the idea for DalkeithPhoto: to explore the connections between these movements, bridging past and present, and celebrating photography as an art form.

What has been involved behind the scenes?
A huge amount of work has gone into the organisation. Zelda has worked on finetuning the RPS exhibition to the specific environment of Dalkeith Palace. The orchestration of the event programme – which includes a major international symposium – has taken the past 8 months to curate. We believe 2024 will set a blueprint for future exhibitions to come.
We believe that there is huge potential for DalkeithPhoto to become an annually sought-after event, a fixture in Scotland’s calendar of art events.
Will DalkeithPhoto become an annual exhibition?
We hope to make this an annual exhibition. The Buccleuch Family Albums provide rich pickings for years to come and there is such a lively photography scene in Scotland, DalkeithPhoto could become an interesting and important platform.
The medium of photography lends itself to creating really accessible and inclusive programming around the exhibitions, such as hands-on workshops, photography walks, talks and tours. In future, we are keen to make a link between The Palace and the natural surroundings of Dalkeith Country Park, placing Nature centre stage. Watch this space.
