Restoration Yard Arrives in Scotland
2nd November, 2016
Restoration Yard, Scotland’s newest premier home and lifestyle store, has opened its doors in Dalkeith Country Park near Edinburgh with the help of creative director, Amanda Pratt, former owner of Avoca – one of the world’s most inspirational brands.
Restoration Yard heralds Amanda’s first UK venture in partnership with Buccleuch, and emulates the signature, eclectic style synonymous with iconic Irish brand Avoca.
The new store accommodates the historical space of the 18th century stableyard at Dalkeith, owned by the Duke of Buccleuch, which has been lovingly reclaimed and renewed around a stunning courtyard.
The building has been sensitively restored to create a balance between showcasing the original features, including the clock tower and ceiling beams and transforming it into a contemporary retail and leisure destination with floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the Park.
Spanning two fantastic floors of shopping, Restoration Yard embraces a diverse retail mix of fashion, furniture and homeware.
Its mission is somewhat different to other retailers – not just focused on selling products, but aiming to creating joy and present beauty to visitors. Its ethos centres around the power of positivity, sourcing ethically and encouraging creativity – it celebrates life and home and aims to provide sustenance for the mind, body and soul.
Design is at Restoration Yard’s heart, as is making people happy. Breaking a few rules, the design eschews many aspects normally associated with a standard shop-fit. Lovely vintage pieces come together in a colourful and inspirational setting within a quirky layout spanning 1,000m2.
Customers can peruse and purchase from a vast yet carefully chosen product range which includes Restoration Yard branded goods developed by Amanda alongside talented retail and graphic designer colleague, Sorcha Maguire.
A purpose-designed wellbeing lab is also nearing completion and will offer a range of activities focused on mindfulness, health and wellbeing.
What’s more, Restoration Yard is set to extend its reach even further across the UK with the launch of a dedicated retail website.
Amanda Pratt commented: “It may seem like an odd thing to say, but in our view, a shop that’s just about selling something doesn’t interest us.
“We have brought a luxury offering to the UK that focusses on simple details, exquisitely executed.
“We wanted to create a store different to anything our customers will have seen before and we have drawn our inspiration from the rich history and heritage of Dalkeith Country Park, allowing us to create a fantastic design that makes us happy.
“Restoration Yard is packed with personality that can’t be found anywhere else Scotland or indeed the UK.”
The retail element of Restoration Yard sits across from a dramatic, glass-walled restaurant space looking out across the river Esk offering a menu grounded in delicious, seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea are all on offer.
Its stunning design is complemented by an excellent menu, served to diners at banquettes and bibelot tables that feature personal items from the Buccleuch family homes – they can also watch the talented team of chefs at work thanks to the long, open kitchen. Hand-blown lights, sheepskins and specially-made glass display cabinets also form focal points as does a communal table made from Cedar wood sourced from the Estate itself.
Snacks and starters, sandwiches and salads, fantastic main courses and moreish desserts join a clean and healthy kids menu within the main café, which caters for up to 100 covers.
Artisanal food products – perfect for gifts and special occasions – also adorn the Food Hall, from specialty chocolates to unique teas and coffees. A smaller sit-in (or take away) Coffee Bar here offers a quick and casual space for up to 35 to enjoy a selection of teas, coffee, soft drinks, as well as pastries and sweet treats, freshly-made sandwiches and salads.
Restoration Yard is open Monday – Sunday between 9.30am-6pm.
